For my chosen blog post I am discussing
an article written by Chris Welch of CNN in January 2011. The article is over
the idea of teaching Mandarin in U.S. schools, and how it is becoming a growing
trend. The article actually discussed a school in Gahanna, Ohio (a school
district outside Columbus) that is on track to receive $1 million in federal
grant money for its Chinese arts program, but taking over the topic even more
is the fact that the district will be receiving $30,000 from the government of
China themselves.
The Gahanna-Jefferson School District has
only recently begun teaching Chinese and is already seeing a high increase of
interest in the area. All across the country dozens of public schools are creating
relationships with the Chinese government. The Gahanna-Jefferson School
District feels it is important to educate the students about China as it is
"the world's second-largest economy and is becoming increasingly
relevant." Some people do not feel the same however, and do not agree with
China giving their school systems money because of the Chinese government's
role as Communist. "A lot of Americans don't really know much about
Chinese culture so they see it as alien so it's bad." School official
Kramar expressed concerned with the possibility of students learning about
communism through the material provided by the China. Other views on the topic
are that even if you don’t agree with how everything works in the Chinese
system, it does not need to stop one from learning about the culture or
language.
Do you feel if you do not agree with a
certain countries system then you should not learn their culture/language? Do
you feel as though it is important to maintain and continue to grow a relationship
with China, the world's second-largest economy?? Would you allow your child to
attend a school that was offering Chinese as a foreign language? If yes, would
you ever move your child to a different school because of a new Chinese program?
1. I think not agreeing with another country's system/policies is one of the BEST reasons to look into and learn further information about that country, so that you can back up any claims and opinions you have to make about the subject matter.
ReplyDelete2.I don't know much about China and our affairs with them, but I do know we are tied economically with them quite a bit so we do need upcoming generations to show interest in learning about the situtations.
3.I hope that when my child is in school they learn at least some language that will benefit them in any way because I am a sophomore in college trying to learn Spanish and it has not come easy to me. If I would have started at a young age I feel it would not be so difficult.

I think that it is even more important to study the culture of a country that you do not agree with. This can help develop understanding, which is beneficial to everyone. It is definitely important to have a relationship with China from an economic standpoint. I would have no problem allowing my child to go to a school that offered chinese as a foreign language, but would never move to a different school district just because they did offer chinese.

ReplyDeleteI feel that adapting to change and accepting different culture's values, especially here in America, is an excellent way to grow and become increasingly more intelligent. I know for a fact that any time something new or strange is introduced in to a society that is unfamiliar, it can be rejected and can take some time to get use to the change. Implementing Chinese into our educational system is not a bad thing at all. We need more cultural diversity in order to communicate better with other countries and to expand our knowledge of how other cultures function. So no, teaching chinese here in American school systems should not be viewed in negative light.
ReplyDeleteI feel in this day and age of the internet expanding knowledge along with the American culture morphing unto something that is more open, there shouldn't be a huge issue about teaching Chinese. This is just necessary to adopt to a changing world otherwise we'll be left behind. Something similar is happening with the teaching of Spanish starting in elementary school in response to the increasing Hispanic population. In both cases it shouldn't be a problem nowadays.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with what Kramar said about the possibility of students learning about communism through the material provided by the China. Studying Chinese language doesnt mean students are learning about Communism. It doesnt mean we have to stop learning because of the country's system is not good. We can find Chinese people all over the world, even in USA. Also, their economy is very good. It's very good thing to study their language because there is a big possibility it's going to be helpful in the future.

Almsot every product you use its more than likely to say "made in China" on it which means we get a majority of our products from them. I would let my child take Chinese as a language course because its a popular language in the United States and would want my child to learn some of the language.

ReplyDeleteIt's important to learn about a country's culture and language ESPECIALLY if you don't agree with their system. Understand that which you oppose is very important for understanding yourself. In addition, the simple act of learning about various countries is always helpful to know more about various countries and fill your own personal knowledge gaps. You never know when that information may come in handy, and it's always interesting to learn about other cultures!
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with what has been said, as it is critical for one to learn more about a different culture/language when they don’t understand or agree with it. Being culturally competent makes you a more well-rounded and informed citizen. I speak a different language and many of those who don’t agree with my country’s politics would probably benefit if they understood our language. Because of this, I do agree with it being crucial to maintain, as well as grow a relationship with China. Not only would I allow, but would probably prefer my child to go to a school that was offering Chinese as a foreign language. Just because I don’t agree with the Chinese government for example, or any other countries for that matter, wouldn’t be reason enough for me to ever want to move my child away. Learning different languages, Chinese included, is very important in our generation.
ReplyDeleteI think that the Chinese language is very interesting and worth learning. I don't believe that one countries culture should have an influence on whether one should learn their language or not. At the end of the day I feel our country should build better relationships with all countries that are willing to work with us. I wished Chinese was offered in the schools I went to, and I would never stop my kids from learning a new language if they wanted to.
ReplyDeleteI think that the fear of foreign cultures is perhaps knee-jerk for some people (although the fear of communism being spread like a disease through language classes is kind of ridiculous,) which is why educating children about other cultures is so necessary. Once people realize that we're all humans, really, the world gets a little less scary, and only then can we start forming civil relations with other cultures. And, since China's economy looks like it'll be playing a huge part in the next few decades of history, it wouldn't be a bad idea to start making friends sooner rather than later.
