Standardized tests are something that not many like taking. According to Herbert Walberg in his article " Stop the War against Standardized tests", he explains that students don"t really understand how much these test really account for. Now the school, educators, and students are being held accountable for how well they do on these tests. Some teachers even describe these tests as "beasts" that should be removed from schools. Not many people even understand why these tests are given, when the authors that make these test say that they are basic and simple, but still students fail to do well on them. There has been researcher done that shows that these tests are good at measuring students knowledge and skills in the class room and can show what a student is able to remember. These tests are used to determine what college or graduate school a student is able to get in to. But now, teachers, the school district, and community are getting the wrath when students don't perform well on the tests. But some students that take them don't care about college or if they get a good grade on them. So then the teachers get a bad report because now they are getting blamed for their students poor performance.
Do you think the teachers and schools should get the blame for students poor perfromance?
I do not think that teachers should take the blame for some students not doing well on a standardized test. Like you mentioned, some students have no intentions of going to college so they don't study as hard or even pay attention in class as much. Although the teacher should push all students to do their best, the teacher should not be looked down upon because of students that simply do not care.

I personally think the main issue with standardized testing is that it forces educators to base their entire curriculum on such a test, rather than actually learning the topic/subject for comprehension and understanding. I know in my own experience, as soon as I've finished a test on whatever subject, I tend to "delete" it from my mind, so to say; so really, standardized testing is eliminating actual comprehension skills, and that's definitely harmful to students of any kind.
ReplyDeleteI dont necessary blame teachers for students poor performance, because a lot of times students do understand that these tests don't have a negative on them so they careless answer the questions given to them. But at the same time not all teacher do a great job at teaching students not saying that there job is easy, and me as a student i can tell you that I have been subject to being in class rooms were the teacher didn't to a good job at teaching.

Because standardized testing is seen, at least to most students, as not of huge concern, it is not taken very seriously and this can account for poor test results. I like the way that Ben put it - these tests force educators to base their entire curriculum off of one test. Teachers should be able to teach with creativity and personal style in a way that best suits the learners.

ReplyDeleteObviously these tests are flawed considering people claim to have failed it and can get a perfect or claim to have done really well and failed the test. I think the tests are a waste of time and the teachers shouldn't be blamed, because like you said some kids just don't care to do well or try on them. Also the tests put a lot of stress on kids because of the pressure to do well. I also think that schools should research a better way to administer these tests.

The result of the standardized tests is one of the ways to to rank the schools and aim to gather the students who have similar academic capacities together. However, these standard test can not express the true value of a student. First, the tests have unified model， some students may put most of them times in it, but some student even do not care about it. Therefore, the tests can not represents the things student actually learn from school. It is unfair to blame school or teachers for the bad results.
ReplyDeleteComing from a student who personally doesn't perform well on standarized test, I feel it is unfair to blame students. First of all, the test are more based on strategy rather than overall knowledge in my opinion; almost like a game where only the kids who know the shortcuts and cheats are successful and even if a student performs well in school, if they are not equiped with "special training," they have a chance to fail. Also, this test is given to EVERY student. It is not individualized to your school's curriculum, it doesn't care if you've learned a certain set of vocab words by your current grade. To blame a student is to slap a number on their back and label them as a failed test subject.

They are not always based on knowledge and I do not think that teachers should be blamed when the students do test poorly. While it is the teachers job to teach, he or she cannot make students learn and evern further, teachers cannot force students to test well.
